The University of Georgia Libraries seeks a collaborative, energetic, and creative individual with a demonstrated commitment to advancing undergraduate learning and research within a library context for the position of Director of the Zell B. Miller Learning Center Library Commons (MLC). Reporting to the University Librarian/Associate Provost, the Director provides strategic direction and leadership for the Library Commons by administering facilities operations, coordinating services provided in the building, planning programs and activities, and managing MLC’s support staff and student assistants. The position engages with faculty and other colleagues to promote, assess and improve the Library Commons, serves as a liaison librarian to a specific department, and participates in library-wide and campus-wide meetings and committees.
The MLC is a UGA Libraries strategic initiative undertaken in collaboration with a variety of University partners including the Enterprise Information Technology Services, UGA Center for Teaching and Learning, Facilities Management, Vice President for Instruction, and Campus Reservations as well as the Research and Instruction Department within the UGA Libraries to provide a Library Commons with transparent and seamless academic support and services for students. In this capacity the Director will execute planning, facilitation, negotiation, supervision, troubleshooting, and assessment to further a vision for and a commitment to progressive services for effective student learning. The director oversees the work of 5 support staff and 25 student assistants, and coordinates with 4 research and instruction librarians based at the MLC. Information about MLC: http://mlc.uga.edu/

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages and administers the work of the Miller Learning Center by formulating and assessing goals and priorities, monitoring facilities operations, controlling expenditures and budget development, and adjusting to changes in staffing, workload, budget and perceived needs.
Assesses the impact and growth of the Libraries resources and services centered in the MLC by overseeing the maintenance of statistics and by conducting follow-up surveys, examining student performance, and talking with faculty. Chairs and manages the Student Advisory Group, which meets twice annually to capture feedback from students about Libraries/MLC services, resources, facilities, and programming.
Maintains an atmosphere conducive to the development, productivity, and job satisfaction of staff members by supervising and evaluating the staff involved in the daily operation of the Miller Learning Center.
Uses a variety of creative means to successfully promote the combined services of the MLC to both internal and external constituencies. Oversees the outreach for library programs and services centered at the MLC by coordinating marketing and PR strategies, such as the development of web pages, brochures, public service announcements and other tools.
Coordinates tutoring and writing help with the English Department’s Writing Center and the Division of Academic Enhancement, a unit of the Office of the Vice President for Instruction.
Organizes and participates in regular meetings of partners to develop and improve coordination, facilitate cross-fertilization of service innovations, and share information.
Serves as a subject liaison librarian to an academic department and teaches those students and faculty to make effective use of resources through library instruction sessions and in-depth reference assistance; provides general reference assistance delivered primarily through chat and in-person at a service desk.
Contributes to overall Libraries leadership as a member of the Department Heads Group, deliberating on issues, making recommendations for action, and managing implementation.
Chairs and manages the UGA Libraries’ Undergraduate Research Awards, which provides cash prizes for excellence in research and academic inquiry.
Maintains a thorough knowledge of developments in the “teaching library” by continuing education and professional development activities, such as conferences, workshops, and committee work; by conducting research or writing for publication; or by engaging in other creative and learning activities.
Keeps the University Librarian and Associate Provost, the Head of the Research and Instruction Department, the MLC Support Partnership and other appropriate personnel informed of related issues by communicating and interpreting library and university policies and procedures, concerns and issues.
Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via GRAPEVINE, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings/committees and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.
Maintains flexibility and awareness and acts upon changes and needs in the organization and the university community by assuming similar duties and responsibilities.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and professional achievements. UGA librarians are non-tenured faculty members.
