The Department of Journalism in the Grady College at the University of Georgia seeks a health and medical journalist of national or international stature to serve as the tenured Knight Chair in Health and Medical Journalism.

Academic Rank/Salary. Professor or Associate Professor, with responsibilities in teaching, outreach and service. Salary competitive.

The successful candidate will direct a professional master’s degree program in Health and Medical Journalism, endowed by the Knight Foundation, currently in its ninth year of teaching students to cover health and medicine for any market or audience. The chair advises students in the program and helps them create digital content for Grady College’s laboratory newsroom, Grady Newsource, as well as for professional media organizations. An entrepreneurial sense of the possible and a willingness to experiment with new forms of storytelling to engage audiences around health and medical topics are essential as we seek to deepen ties between the college and the profession. The chair holder will have the opportunity to expand programs at UGA with media and journalism organizations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Medical College of Georgia and the Morehouse School of Medicine, among others.

Minimum Qualifications

We seek an innovative, digital-savvy health and medical journalist with experience in obtaining and analyzing health-related datasets, including methods of communicating that information clearly. Computer-assisted reporting skills and the ability to teach beginners the basics of data reporting are essential. Candidate should be comfortable with interactive, immersive and multi-platform media formats. Candidates for the rank of professor must document a successful career in quality health and medical journalism, and hold a PhD, or an MD. Candidates for the rank of associate professor must document exceptional professional accomplishments in quality health and medical journalism, hold a master’s degree, and be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire. Candidates who have not been tenured at a prior institution, must be approved for tenure on appointment by the Chancellor of the University System of Georgia.
