The University of Georgia Libraries seeks an Assistant Editor for The Georgia Review. Reporting to the Editor of The Georgia Review, the Assistant Editor is responsible for performing high-quality editorial work dealing primarily with the screening and evaluating of manuscripts—poetry, short fiction, book reviews, and a wide range of interdisciplinary, literary, and personal essays. A crucial function of this position is oversight of the journal’s book review section. This function involves identifying titles for review, planning and making review assignments, and working (in concert with the editor) with reviewers on manuscript revisions. Other responsibilities include: generating original website content; researching the accuracy of quotations and documentation in accepted nonfiction manuscripts; assisting with Georgia Review programs, such as lectures and readings; representing The Georgia Review occasionally at conferences or other literary events; overseeing graduate student assistants and/or undergraduate interns; and other editorial functions as assigned. All work is performed with considerable independent judgment and leads, whenever appropriate, to written or verbal recommendations of action to the editor and/or other staff members. Some evening and weekend work required.

The Georgia Review was founded at the University of Georgia in 1947 and published here ever since. It has become one of America’s most highly regarded journals of arts and letters. Each quarterly issue offers a diverse, thoughtfully orchestrated gathering of short stories, general-interest essays, poems, reviews, and visual art. Pulitzer Prize winners and previously unpublished writers may find themselves side by side in the Georgia Review’s carefully designed and durable pages; works from the journal are regularly chosen for reprinting in the Pushcart Prize anthology and the entire gamut of the Best American series—including Poetry, Essays, and even Mystery Stories. The Georgia Review has been a finalist some twenty times in various categories of the National Magazine Awards—including General Excellence—and has won for Fiction and for Essays against such competition as the New Yorker, the Atlantic, Harper’s, and Smithsonian. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Screens and evaluates manuscripts (poetry, short fiction, and essays).

Oversees the book review component of the journal by identifying new books for possible review and contacting potential reviewers about assignments; evaluating initial drafts of submitted reviews, both those assigned and those received unsolicited; and, in consultation with the editor and managing editor, completing the preparation of accepted reviews for publication.

Assists the managing editor with researching the accuracy of quotations and documentation in accepted nonfiction manuscripts.

Oversees graduate student assistants and/or undergraduate interns.

Generates original web content for the site’s various featured categories.

Assists with the planning, coordination, and publicity of local Georgia Review programs, such as lectures and readings.

Represents The Georgia Review at local, regional, and national functions as necessary.

Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the department by assuming related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary: $47,476. This is a non-tenured faculty position. UGA offers an attractive benefits program including a choice of health and retirement plans, dental plan, vision plan, tuition remission, paid relocation, 21 days annual leave, 12 days sick leave, and 12 paid holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A terminal degree in relevant discipline; minimum of three years of relevant experience with print literary publication(s). Excellent copy-editing skills, including a solid knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style. Ability to plan and meet publishing deadlines, and to work under deadline pressure. Thorough awareness of literary writing and publishing, both past and current. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to pay close attention to detail. Proficiency in Microsoft Word. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical Demands: Ability to sit for long periods of time working at a computer.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Submittable Manager, Excel, and WordPress a plus.
