Job Summary

The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences seeks applicants to serve as Director of the Franklin Residential College. The appointment is expected to start in February 2018 and be renewable on a yearly basis, pending annual review.

The Franklin Residential College (FRC) infuses intellectual and cultural life into the residential experience of our students, all of whom are Franklin majors. The residential college, established in 2000, is a partnership among the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the Vice President for Instruction, and University Housing. Our residents include first-year and upper division students and most live at Rutherford Hall for multiple years, beginning as first-year students, sophomores, and even upper-class students. The FRC is modeled on the residential colleges established at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

The academic partnership with Franklin College is the primary purpose of the FRC, particularly in feeding the intellectual curiosity of students through exposure to the fine arts and individual contact with faculty members of all disciplines. First year students in the FRC take one of two First Year Odyssey Seminars, taught in Rutherford Hall.

The FRC has an Academic Advisor in Residence living in the Rutherford Hall apartment. The advisor reports to the FRC Director, and supervises the students serving as Director’s Assistants and is integrally involved in all aspects of daily student life at the FRC.

Duties: The FRC Director oversees all aspects of the Franklin Residential College, especially those related to the academic mission of the FRC. These duties include: organizing and leading the academic activities for the FRC (guest speakers, special academic events, field trips); developing a diverse and inclusive residential learning environment; working with the Academic Advisor and others to recruit students to the FRC; assisting with the FRC’s unique governance model; overseeing the FRC’s budget. The FRC Director reports to one of the associate deans in the Franklin College.

The Director of the FRC will receive a stipend or an annual salary supplement. This is a part-time appointment, with an expected time commitment of approximately 30 hours/month during the Fall and Spring academic terms.

The University of Georgia is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation or protected veteran status.
