The University of Georgia (UGA) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Pharmacy. The University of Georgia, a land-grant and sea-grant university with statewide commitments and responsibilities is the state’s oldest, most comprehensive and most diversified institution of higher education. The College of Pharmacy is a leader in regional, national and international areas of teaching, research, and service. The College of Pharmacy plays an important role in the University’s educational and service missions through the acquisition, application, and dissemination of scientific advances that support the unprecedented advances in drug discovery, and drive exciting new interdisciplinary approaches to scientific discovery.

The Dean will provide energetic and visionary leadership, as well as principled administrative guidance and advocacy for the mission of the College, by advancing our leadership in pharmaceutical education, biomedical research, and public service at the state, national, and international levels. The College has established a Center for Drug Discovery, developed a BS program in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, increased interdisciplinary research and strengthened its research focus. During the last two decades the clinical faculty has been augmented, clinical activities increased, and the College has become actively involved in residency training. Fundraising efforts have increased the number of scholarships, endowed professorships and augmented available funds for building enhancements. In 2007, the Georgia Legislature approved funding of $44 million for a new 93, 288 square foot addition. Known as “Pharmacy South,” the new facility was built adjacent to the Robert C. Wilson Pharmacy Building and was dedicated in September 2009. Renovation of more than 60% of the Wilson Building was completed in 2010. The College contains state-of-the-art research and class room facilities.

The College offers a professional degree program leading to a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD), several postgraduate residency training programs in a variety of clinical specialties located throughout Georgia, a B.S. program in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, as well as various certificates, M.S. and Ph.D. programs in the pharmaceutical, clinical and regulatory sciences. The clinical training occurs at various sites throughout the state by execution of MOUs, leases and/or contracts. The main College is located in Athens with extended campuses in Albany, Augusta, Savannah and Gwinnett.

The number of students associated with the College is well over 900 (approximately 550 PharmD students, 100 graduate students 250 undergraduate students and 22 residents.) The College also provides postgraduate training through postdoctoral and residence training opportunities. The College has 86 full and part-time faculty members. The College has joint faculty appointments with the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the College of Education. The College has 67 staff members working at the various campuses. The College engages more than 300 preceptors, 50 adjunct faculty members.

The University of Georgia, College of Pharmacy, founded in 1903, is dedicated to training future pharmacists and researchers. The College recently underwent its PharmD accreditation process and was granted accreditation through June 30, 2025. The College encompasses a broad range of research, training, clinical and administrative activities that includes two distinct academic departments; Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences. In addition, the College has a Division of Experience Programs; a Division of Non-traditional Education and Outreach, and several support units (IT, Instructional Design, Business Office, and Facility Support). Administratively in addition to the Office of the Dean, the College has an Office of External Affairs and an Office of Student Affairs. The College also has a Center for Pharmacy and Experimental Therapeutics located in Augusta jointly operated with the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.

The college also offers graduate studies in disciplines associated with pharmacotherapeutic research, clinical work, and pharmaceutical health service, outcomes, and policy. It also offers a variety of joint degree programs. For more information please see http://www.rx.uga.edu/.

The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College, reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The Dean’s duties include overall responsibility for leadership of the College; strategic planning and analysis of the College’s operations; research productivity with an emphasis on increasing external funding; curriculum development for departments and programs in the College; clinical teaching, research and service; budget oversight and development; fundraising; faculty recruitment; working with UGA’s Office of Government Relations as an advocate for the College with state government; networking with pharmacists, biomedical researchers, and associations around the state and nationally; and liaising with department heads, program directors and College staff.

The ideal candidate will possess outstanding scholarly credentials and a demonstrated commitment to research, graduate and professional education, clinical service, public engagement, and development. Candidates must hold an earned doctorate in a health science related field. Candidates are expected to have a distinguished record of scholarly, research, and teaching accomplishments commensurate with an appointment at the rank of full professor at the University of Georgia. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service; should be able to manage and advocate for a diverse college with multiple departments, divisions, and units; and should be an effective leader with excellent financial acumen. The Dean is expected to work in a collaborative and collegial manner with a diverse faculty and staff and with the deans of other schools and colleges within the University to encourage externally supported research and the provision of high-quality clinical services and to be a successful fundraiser with foundations, industry partners, and individual donors.
