Job Summary

The University of Georgia Libraries is seeking candidates for the position of Politics and Public Policy Archivist. This position is responsible to the Director for the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies for administering the Two-Party Georgia Oral History Program and related efforts that document Georgia’s political history and the ways that Georgians have influenced politics and public policy nationally and internationally. In addition, the incumbent works in coordination with the Director to acquire donations of collections for the Russell Library. The Archivist serves as the Development liaison, promotes and supports research at the Russell Library, and contributes to public humanities initiatives. The Archivist is a member of the University of Georgia Libraries non-tenure track faculty.

The Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies is a department within the University of Georgia Libraries that reports to the University Librarian/Associate Provost and serves as a center for research and study of the modern American political system, with particular emphasis on the role of Georgia and that of the U. S. Congress. The Russell Library seeks to document fully the dynamic relationship of politics, policy, and culture—where public interest intersects with the three branches of government at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels—through the papers, archival records, and material culture of individuals and organizations. The Russell Library is also dedicated to developing and presenting public programming and educational materials that facilitate and encourage research, raise public awareness of the Library and its collections and services, and provide learning opportunities for the communities it serves. The Russell Library pursues alliances and opportunities for collaboration with individuals and organizations that advance its mission. The Russell Library is a founding member of the Association of Centers for the Study of Congress and is a primary partner and official repository for Center for Social Justice, Human and Civil Rights and the Foot Soldier Project for Civil Rights Studies, a collaborative project dedicated to documenting and chronicling the experiences and perspectives of lesser known participants in the civil rights movement in Georgia.

The Russell Library staff consists of the Director (department head), six archivists, one Digital Media Professional Specialist, and student assistants, and is responsible for acquiring, preserving, and making accessible permanent historical records according to archival standards and procedures; providing reference assistance to a variety of patrons; and providing class instruction, exhibits, and public programming as well as administering the Georgia Capitol Museum.

Miller Learning Center, Map and Government Information Library, Repository, Special Collections Libraries, and the Carnegie Library. SALARY AND BENEFITS: Minimum Salary: $47,476 (commensurate with experience). UGA librarians are non-tenured faculty members. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Administers the Two-Party Georgia Oral History Project in coordination with the head of Oral History and Media Unit of the Russell Library by planning and conducting interviews; performing archival research; and collaborating with co-workers and stakeholders to identify gaps in the holdings and prospective interviewees for oral history documentation.

*Acquires gifted collections related to politics and public policy in coordination with the Director. Promotes and maintains donor relations by identifying and communicating with past and prospective donors of materials for the Library, and maintaining positive donor relations. Secures Deeds of Gift for Russell Library collections.

*Serves as the Russell Library’s liaison with the Libraries’ Development Office in part by helping to identify potential interest by outside funding sources and contributing to the preparation of funding proposals.

*Seeks external funding for special projects in collaboration with Director, Libraries’ Development Office, and department staff by identifying possible sources of funding, coordinating the preparation, contributing to writing, and submitting proposals; seeks opportunities to multiply the resources, prospects, and products of the department.

*Maintains a broad network of contacts, uses the department’s social media accounts and website, writes articles, and provides editorial and authorship support for exhibits, reports, and publications to promote and advance the development of the Russell Library’s political collections.

Serves as a member of the Oral History and Media Unit of the Russell Library by participating in and providing interview and technical support as required.

Participates in initiatives of public impact, particularly GALILEO-related projects that expand access to content on politics and public policy. Examples include editorial and authorship support for the New Georgia Encyclopedia and serving in an advisory capacity to the Digital Library of Georgia and Willson Center DigiLab.

Hires, trains, and supervises one or more student assistants.

Provides research assistance and participates in staffing the department’s reference desk as needed and assigned; develops and maintains knowledge of collections within the library and awareness of related holdings at other institutions; and provides instruction and tours as needed.

Participates in general departmental administration by contributing to the planning and developing of special projects, functions and exhibits and participating in activities that also may occur on weekends and in evenings; submits reports.

Maintains an active national presence by participating in professional activities and engaging in scholarship through publication and presentation; pursues continuing education opportunities; maintains professional membership and/or accreditation; maintains an awareness of current trends in the archives field especially related to arrangement and descriptive standards, digitization, congressional papers, and shares knowledge with co-workers; and participates in relevant library/university groups and committees and provides service to the libraries and university as appropriate.

Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the department and organization and contributes to the team effort by assuming other similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST HAVE:

Demonstrated ability to conduct oral histories and work with archival film, video, audio formats; audio and video hardware; edit software; develop web access; and use oral histories in academic research and teaching; Working knowledge of historical research methodology and resources; Familiarity with basic video production, particularly lighting and microphone setup, and audio and video technologies used in conducting oral histories; Knowledge of Southern political history and post-1900 Georgia, in particular; Excellent organizational and project management skills; Excellent research, writing, and communication skills, including the ability to actively listen, understand, and articulate the needs of researchers and other stakeholders. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse groups; Ability to function independently and as a contributing team member in a production-oriented environment and to collaborate with other departments, as needed; Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs. and tolerate dust and inactive mold spores.

Minimum Qualifications

ALA-accredited Master in Library and Information Science; or relevant Master’s degree (with ACA certification expected in 5 years for continued employment)

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree (PhD) in History with a focus on modern Southern politics, history, and culture; One year of supervisory experience or classroom instruction preferred; Working knowledge of writing grant or other funding proposals preferred; Demonstrated ability to work with donors and other stakeholders preferred; Willingness to travel throughout the state of Georgia as required to conduct interviews.
